Measuring
Cup Set a
reproduction of Jeannette's 1930's vintage four piece measuring cup
set
has started appearing online and on Ebay. Do not allow anyone to
sell it to you as "old."
Anyone seeing this set for the first time has to agree it bears a strong resemblance to the Jeannette Four-Piece Measuring Cup Set from the 1930's. However, there are at least four differences between the genuine Jeannette set and the new reproduction set. Some differences can be spotted immediately; others will require additional equipment. First of all, color shade or opacity is not a reliable indicator of the cup's manufacture date. Old cups can vary in shade from light to dark and from translucent to opaque. But general quality differences may be easy to spot. In this case not all of the new cups' handles stood straight out at the side. New cups are also about 10 to 20% heavier than old cups.
Next, look at the bottom of each cup. The new ones have a pronounced indentation. The older indentations are shallower and have a thin inner ring that can be felt with a fingernail.
Now look at the lettering on each handle. Old lettering is crisp and round. New letters and numerals are larger and appear to have been done freehand.
The final test is foolproof, but it does require the use of a black light. Old measuring cups glow a brilliant yellow-green while new ones do not!
